Why Do We Kiss?
A long time ago, scientists proclaimed that people found kissing
pleasurable because when the two lips met during kissing, an electric
current was generated. We now know this to be completely untrue but new studies have shown
that when two people embrace, hormones are released into the blood
stream which immediately induces a sense of euphoria when you feed on the
sweetness of your mouth. Besides, kissing does not merely involve the lips! A real kiss
makes use of the tongue, that sensuous organ you can use to delightfully
explore the inner reaches of her mouth. Imagine curling up on a soft rug in front of a cracking fire with your
partner. There\'s nothing more natural than to have warm kiss and cuddle is
there? But have you ever wondered why we kiss each other? Whether it\'s a quick
peck on the cheek of a friend, or a deep, arousing kiss
that\'s a lead up to something hot, we all kiss. Origin of the kiss
It seems that the custom of humans kissing probably derived from
primitive times, with food being transferred from the mother\'s to her
baby\'s mouths. This lip contact developed into a way for mothers to show
affection for their children, in much the same way as mothers do today. Another theory says that the kiss was reflected in the Ziller Valley of
Central Europe, where the exchange of chewed tobacco between a male
and a female was common. The young man would let a tip of the piece of
tobacco rest between his closed teeth and invite the girl to grasp it with
her teeth - which of course obliged her to press her mouth firmly on that
of the young man - and pull it out. If a girl accepted the wad of
pre-chewed tobacco, it meant she returned the boy\'s love. The third theory is from a religious origin. There have been examples
from around the world as early as 2000 BC, that show that people could
have brought their faces together to symbolize spiritual union. Even in
the culture of Indians, it was believed that the exhaled breath was
part of the soul, and by two people bringing their mouths together, showed
the joining of their souls. (Another variation on this believed that
kissing evolved from the smelling of a companion\'s face as an act of
greeting). Kiss through history
Even without fully knowing where the kiss came from, it is well known
that the kiss has been with us for a long time. - In the sixth century in France, dancing was one way to display
affection, but every dance was ended in a kiss.
- Apparently, Russia was the first to incorporate the kiss into
the marriage ceremony, where a promise was sealed with a kiss.
- The Romans kissed to greet each other. On Roman emperor showed a
persons importance, by what part of his body they were allowed to kiss,
from the cheek to the foot.
- In 16th century England, the "clove-studded apple" originated.
An apple was prepared by piercing it with as many cloves as the fruit
could hold and then a maid then carried the apple through the fair till
she spied a lad she thought worth kissing. She would offer him the
apple, and once he\'d selected and chewed one of the cloves, they would
share a kiss. After that, the apple passed into the man\'s possession, and
he would venture off in search of another lass to continue the game
with.
The top 4 kisses of all time
- At the Minnesota Rennaissance Festival on 15 September 1990,
Alfred Wolfram from New Brighton, kissed 8001 people in 8 hours - over
sixteen people a minute.
- Bobbi Sherlock and Ray Blazina kissed for 130 hours and 2 minutes
between 1-6 May 1978.
- Still in cinematrography, the longest kiss in films history was
between Jane Wyman and Regis Tommey in the 1941 film, "You\'re in the Army
Now". The kiss lasted 3 minutes and 5 seconds, or 1/25th of the total
running time.
- In 1926, the eponymous hero of the film Don Juan averages one kiss
every 53 seconds (191 kisses in total).
A kiss is a kiss
It\'s a kiss that brings every fibre of your being alive, turns your
stomach over, and sends goosebumps up your spine. Ingrid Bergman once said
about it "a kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when
words become superfluous". | Variety of the
Kisses Peaches kiss: When you say the word peaches, your lips come
together for less than a second. Imagine saying this when you kiss - it
happens very quickly.
Glass kiss: This kiss is most commonly used when you are
separated by a pane of glass. Sometimes you are in a hurry and can\'t roll
down the car window, or the sliding door is shut and you don\'t want to let
the cold air in the house.
Underwater kiss: Remember wondering what it would be like to
kiss underwater? Then you convinced someone to try it with you in the
pool, you found out it was no big deal: you can\'t feel their lips very
well, the chlorine hurts your eyes!
Blown kiss: Not too common anymore. Seen mostly in parades and
silent movies. Hand kiss: This kiss is placed in the hand, was very popular in
last 2-3 centuries in Europe. Dark kiss: Kissing in the dark is a problem for those with bad
sense of direction - they end up kissing the ear. One way to alleviate
this problem is to locate your date\'s nose, grip it tightly to use as a
reference point, and kiss below the hand. |
